History
From Marching to Zion “The beginning of the church at Elgin, Illinois, dates back to the early years of the 1880’s. The roots of Elgin’s history center essentially on the early activities of the Lindoerfer and Schambach families.”
- 1881 the first convert was baptized – Frieda Ricka Lindoerfer by counseling Elder George Welk of Morton, Illinois.
- 1881-1886 church was held at the home of Frank Woertz at the corner of Chicago Street and North Liberty.
- Elgin Church was served by multiple non-resident elders: George Welk of Morton, Illinois, and Christian Gerber and Martin Steidinger both of Fairbury, Illinois. George Schambach served as the first know resident Elder of Elgin congregation, but his dates of service are unknown.
- 1887 the church purchased a lot at the corners of Lillie Street and Preston Avenue.
- 1895 the church building was added onto with an new east wing.
- 1912 the church building was remodeled to accomodate for growth.
- 1928 Jacob Stettner was ordained Elder and served until 1955.
- 1930 the existing building was torn down and a new brick building was constructed in the same location.
- 1946 William Stettner was ordained Elder, concurrently with Jacob, and William served until 1964.
- 1961 the church building was renovated.
- 1961 Herman Kellenberger was ordained Elder on July 16, 1961 and served until 1983.
- 1977 Nathan Steffen was ordained Elder on October 23, 1977 and served until 2002.
- 1980??? Property was purchased on West Highland Avenue with the intention of constructing a Nursing Home, Church and Fellowship Center. The Nursing Home was constructed soon thereafter, and continues to operate as Highland Oaks today.
- 1999 Ronald Schambach was ordained Elder on March 14, 1999 and served until 2011.
- 1999 the Fellowship Center was constructed north of the church building parking lot, and is utilized today.
- 1996 the church constructed a new building at 2740 West Highland Avenue, where the church is today.
- 2011 David Steffen was ordained Elder on March 20, 2011 and served until 2014.
- 2014 Brad Eisenmann was counseling Elder and served until 2019.
- 2019 Dan Moser was ordained Elder on March 17, 2019 and he continues to serve today.
